ABOUT MELABEV

About Melabev

About 150,000 people in Israel live with dementia and Alzheimer’s. As life expectancy increases, these numbers are expected to increase. In the coming decade, the number of people with dementia is expected to double.

Melabev provides community care for people living with dementia and Alzheimer’s.

Melabev was established by the late Professor Arnold Rosin, who for years ran the geriatric department at Shaare Zedek Medical Center in Jerusalem, and Leah Abramowitz, MSW. Together they identified the unmet needs of people with dementia and Alzheimer’s. They subsequently formulated a unique professional method of treating people with dementia in the community. Inspired by them, Melabev has continued to develop services over the years, including Melabev Day Centers, “Melabev At Home,” Melabev Nursing care Services, and Melabev “Peima,” for young people with dementia and Alzheimer’s. Melabev is still one of the only organizations in Israel providing community care to people with dementia and Alzheimer’s.

Since its inception, Melabev specializes in improving the quality of life of older adults and in providing services for people with dementia and Alzheimer’s, of all ages. Every year, thousands of people coping with dementia and Alzheimer’s, as well as their families and relatives, receive a wide range of Melabev services.

The Melabev Method

Melabev’s goal is to enhance the well-being of those in our care, giving them the quality of life, dignity, and increased self-worth they so deserve.

The Melabev method is a unique therapeutic method that provides a broad and diverse spectrum of targeted therapies, on the cognitive, mental, and physical levels, through an array of professionals. This all happens under one roof, giving patients a social, warm, loving, respectful, and respectful framework.
Melabev believes in person-centered care, building on the individual’s abilities, talents, and interests. By engaging them in meaningful activities and fulfilling their needs for social interaction, Melabev enables most clients to be able to age in place and remain in their homes for as long as possible.
Programming is based on the acceptance of the person’s present cognitive level while respecting the participant’s past. This method, developed by Melabev, is person-centered, focusing on the individual’s culture, mother tongue, and interests.
Studies show it is essential for those in cognitive decline to remain mentally, socially, and physically active to maintain their current level of cognition for as long as possible.

Melabev operates day centers and home activity programs, providing care within the community

for people living with cognitive impairment caused by various forms of dementia.

Melabev Day Centers

Clients of the day centers are exposed to environmental stimuli through various therapeutic activities, including gymnastics, animals, gardening, music, crafts, movement, and individual therapy via computer, speech therapy, etc. The programming takes place in separate groups in different languages: Hebrew, English, French, and Russian and in groups according to each individual’s cognitive level.

"Melabev At Home"

This service brings Melabev’s unique therapeutic activities into the homes of older adults with an emphasis on dementia or Alzheimer care. All activities are carried out by professional therapists under the guidance of a licensed social worker. The social worker provides support and counseling to family members and caregivers as needed. This service is available in most parts of the country.

Melabev "Peima"

Of the over 150,000 people in Israel diagnosed with some form of dementia or Alzheimer’s, of that number, an estimated 2-10% are under the age of 65, most of whom are diagnosed in their 40’s and 50’s. Melabev is the pioneer service provider for this population. They are young, and their bodies are strong and full of energy. Melabev provides an outlet for this energy through individualized therapies and activities to help them maintain their verbal and social skills for as long as possible.

Melabev Nursing Care

As part of Melabev’s holistic approach to caring for older adults, Melabev established a Caregiving Service comprised of trained Israeli and foreign workers as caregivers. This service is available for home care – part or full time- or if help is needed only during a hospital stay. Melabev is licensed to provide caregiving services on behalf of the Bituach Leumi (NII), The Foundation for the Benefit of Holocaust Victims in Israel, the Ministries of Welfare and Defense, all health maintenance organizations and other institutions. We also offer private care.

Melabev "Kesher" Telephone Program

This service is offered free of charge to older adults living alone. Volunteers make friendly “How are you today” calls to check on the well-being and needs of the subscriber. The goal is to relieve the intense loneliness felt by many older adults all over the country. We are often told that the volunteers from Melabev are the only people who call to check-in and are the only voice these older adults hear throughout the week.

Over 1800 people subscribe to this service.
